Hill Street Studios is a commercial photography studio located in South Bay area of Los Angeles, with locations in Gardena and Hermosa Beach. We specialize in lifestyle photography, and also provide our clients with editorial photography, commercial photography, stock photography, corporate photography, industrial photography, still life photography, travel photography, and product photography. We love working with people, capturing their unique personalities in group and individual portraits.

The studio was founded by Lawrence Manning (Lawrence Manning Photography) and Betty Mallorca in June, 2000. For the past thirty years, Lawrence Manning has gathered extensive experience and technical expertise, having photographed everything from computer chips to the Hausa culture of Northern Nigeria, a series of farmers' portraits series and rural celebrations in Indiana to aerospace satellites. Betty Mallorca brings her eye for color, line and proportion to every project: art direction, graphic design, commercial illustration or fine art paintings.

We work with a team of passionate creatives involved in all aspects of commercial photo production, including making images for major stock photography agencies. We are also fortunate to have several talented contributing photographers working with us.

Hill Street Studios is proud to be a founding member of Blend Images (www.blendimages.com), which specializes in ethnically diverse business and lifestyle imagery.

We are always interested in finding locations (homes, offices, restaurants, small businesses and more), models (professional talent as well as amateurs), and interesting situations to photograph. We love what we do, and enjoy making new friends while we are doing it! Please explore our website to see examples of our work.

Feedback from models:

Hill Street Studios is a fantastic studio to work for! They create wonderfully innovative and gorgeous images, while at the same time always treating their models like friends. It is fun and relaxing shooting with Hill Street Studios and I can't wait to shoot with them again! – JS

Working for Hill Street Studios has always been a delightful experience. Their professionalism and talent produce many brilliant images. As a model it's reassuring to work in a comfortable environment where I'm treated as a person and not a product. – AH

Speaking Engagement
Tuesday, 22 November 2011 06:32

Today Lawrence, Dave Klaus, and I visited Dutch Myers, an instructor in the photography department at Santa Monica College, to speak to two of his classes. We brought, of course, lots of photos and some motion clips for show-and-tell. We spoke about pre-production, emphasized the need for storytelling, and answered students' questions. We could have gone on about this all day long.

It's pretty easy to speak about the stuff you work at day in and day out, and Dutch assured us that this rather unexciting information was just what his students needed and wanted to hear.

Dutch, Dave and I are all SMC alumni--how that campus has changed since my student days!

Wish I had a different visual, but I completely forgot about taking any photos. (Probably because I, personally, didn't do ANY pre-production on this gig! Ahhh). We all enjoyed ourselves, it was great to see Dutch again, and I hope we can do it again sometime.

That's a Really Big Picture!

The Los Angeles County Fair ends this weekend. We didn't go!

This Hill Street Studios photo (the boy, not the cow) was used extensively in the fair's marketing campaign. I'd love to have the billboard after it is taken down. Wish I knew how to do that...

All Over Town!

Meet Colson -- he's the guy on the left. He has been modeling for us for probably 5 years now.

I guess there are thousands of these all over town!

Voting Project

We have been immersed in red, white & blue for weeks now... I think we are (finally) nearing the end.

We did a wonderful little photoshoot today with a friend/neighbor/actor. It was a good reminder for us of how a good model carries the shoot better than anyone else in the room. Thanks, Stuart!

Here are three of my favorite photos from the earliest shoot of the series. It's been a fun ride!

Our Favorite Security Agent

I was signing onto my Yahoo! account several months ago, and was delighted to see this very large Hill Street Studios photo of our son Jake staring back at me.

Doesn't he look handsome, strong and mighty? He is always a good man to have backing you up.

Maybe you saw it, too. I'm not sure if it is still up there, but it was live for quite a while. I told Jake that his photo had many millions of views!
